The opening ceremony of the 73rd ASEAN Science and Technology meeting was held in the Myanmar International Convention Centre-2 in Nay Pyi Taw at 9:00 am on 17 October 2017.

The ceremony attended by science and technology Deputy Ministers of ASEAN countries, high ranking officials and members of ASEAN Secretariat office was opened with the playing of the ASEAN theme song.

In his welcoming speech, Deputy Minister for Education U Win Maw Tun said it has been 20 years since Myanmar became a member country of ASEAN in 1997, and Myanmar is actively participating and cooperating in ASEAN science and technology activities to reduce the development rate difference and increase expertise and build capacity in science, technology and creativity. Myanmar is working together to increase cooperation between ASEAN member countries and partner countries and ASEAN’s 2015 aim of increasing the momentum of competition and creativity. The Deputy Minister added his strong belief of valuable outcomes, firm decision and complete results being the consequence of holding the meeting.

The current ASEAN Science and Technology Committee chairman Cambodia Ministry of Industry and Handicraft Under Secretary-general of State Dr. Tung Ciny also delivered a speech, after which he transferred the chairmanship of the ASEAN Science and Technology Committee to Myanmar.

Ministry of Education, Department of Vocational Training Director general Dr. Aye Myint accepted the chairman’s position and delivered a speech. The 73rd ASEAN Science and Technology meeting was held where science and technology deputy ministers of ASEAN countries and high ranking officials discussed matters relating to science and technology sector cooperation among ASEAN countries, science and technology matters that will be discussed by ASEAN in cooperating with ASEAN and partner organisations such as the US, Russia, India and the EU.
