University of Yangon holds grand opening of centennial celebration

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi attended the grand opening ceremony of University of Yangon’s centennial celebrated in its convocation hall in the campus yesterday morning, and she delivered a speech at the event.
The ceremony was also attended by Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than, Union Ministers Lt-Gen Kyaw Swe, Dr Pe Myint, U Min Thu, Dr Aung Thu, U Thant Sin Maung, U Win Khaing, U Thein Swe, Dr Than Myint, Dr Myo Thein Gyi, Dr Myint Htwe, Dr Win Myat Aye and U Kyaw Tin; Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Yangon Region Hluttaw Speaker U Tin Maung Tun, Deputy Ministers U Win Maw Tun and U Kyaw Linn, Ministers of Yangon Region government, Hluttaw representatives, rectors and professors of universities, alumni of University of Yangon, new generation students, and the invited guests.
First, the students of University of Yangon performed with ‘Mya Kyun Nyo Nyo’ (The Emerald Island) to honour the significant features of the university.
The State Counsellor launched the ceremony, and delivered a speech, recognizing the celebration is very significant for both the University of Yangon and the country.
She added the University was established on 1 December 1920, and it 100th anniversary will mark on 1 December 2020. The joyous celebration of centennial has begun taking place, and the activities are expected to increase gradually during this period.
She also remarked the University of Yangon has possessed the great dignity of the country, and can be regarded as the mother of all the universities in the country.
When it was first established, its organizational structures imitated those of England universities. It was also one of the best universities in the Southeast Asia. Nearby Inya Lake, convocation hall, the large dioecious tree (Thit Pote Pin), Adipati Road and its large campus are its significant features to become one of the most attractive universities in the region.
The State Counsellor continued that the government is renovating and upgrading the university during its centennial period by forming work committees for a master plan which is being implemented by a steering committee chaired by the Union Minister for Education.
To promote education quality and physical structures, a software committee and a hardware committee were formed.
She also recognized the adaptation of master plan for the university, including its organizational structure, management, policies and functions, to suit the developing situations. In accordance with the Myanmar Education Law 2015, the University of Yangon would be developed into an autonomous university soon after making preparations.
In the aspect of education reform, a faculty system will be established, and its curricula will be reviewed and developed. Its curricula and policy reform are intended for ensuring quality improvement, socioeconomic development, effective cooperation with international universities and easy student mobility.
Reform programme of the university includes the establishments of internal quality assurance system, applied research activities, internationalizations in cooperation with foreign universities and developing an e-library.
The State Counsellor also explained promoting physical structures of the university in developing a clean and safe campus, upgrading roads, creating a greening area along the Adipati Road without damaging its environment and historic buildings in accordance with the wills of new generation students, its alumni and the common people.
She added the clean water supply, flow of water, drainage system and safe wiring installations are also included in upgrading physical structures of the university.
In academic sector, the existing curricula of university will be upgraded to meet the needs in socioeconomics and education sectors of the country. The curricula reforms could help in cooperation with international institutions and student mobility, and could generate competent human resources for the country, while a credit transfer system would soon be developed for easy cooperation with foreign universities in student mobility.
The State Counsellor remarked promotion of education quality is very fundamental to upgrading the University of Yangon, adding that a university is an educative institution intended for developing good people.
She also concluded that education could help in human development and making right decisions.
The State Counsellor commented it is not possible to judge a subject is better than any other subjects as all of these are useful, and advised to promote all the subjects in developing education sector. The values of subjects depend on the users of these subjects. It is expected to apply these subjects properly.
She also said the government will support harmonious development of subjects and generating capable students who could create a developed country.
She remarked that Myanmar is still a developing country, and that young people are responsible for the development of the country, and they should be proud of this duty.
In conclusions, the State Counsellor called for a successful holding of centennial celebration with the participations of new generation students, alumni and people.
After the speech of State Counsellor, a documentary video of University of Yangon’s history was screened, and she greeted the attendees at the event.
Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than delivered a speech at the second session of the event.
Union Minister for Education explained the 100th anniversary celebration of the University.
Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein made an opening remark of the anniversary.
Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than, Union Ministers Dr Pe Myint, Dr Aung Thu, U Thein Swe, Dr Myo Thein Gyi, Dr Myint Htwe, and U Kyaw Tin, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Yangon Region Hluttaw Speaker U Tin Maung Tun presented certificates to the donors who contributed in holding the centennial celebration.
Former rector of Yangon University Dr Tin Aung Aye, film creator Director U Kyi Soe Tun, dramatist and writer Chit Oo Nyo, musician Daw Nwe Yin Win, writer Dr Khin Aye (Maung Khin Min-Danubyu) and sports professional U Nanda Kyaw Swa talked on their previous experiences in the university.
Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Thu, who is a former rector of the University of Yangon, explained the emergence of Gangaw (Mesua ferrea) wood and its park for the university.
The donors of Gangaw park presented cash and document on the donation to Rector of University of Yangon Dr Phoe Kaung.
The ceremony to open Gangaw wood and Gangaw park to mark the 100th anniversary of the university was held in front of Amara Dormitory in the campus, and it was attended by Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than and Union Ministers Dr Aung Thu and U Kyaw Tin.
Rector Dr Phoe Kaung and donors Dr Zaw Win and U Sai Myo Win cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the wood and the park.
The centennial celebration of University of Yangon will be held the whole year until December next year.
In the first week of celebration, book shows and book sale festival will be organized along the Adapati Road, in front of library and around Thit Pote tree, the displays of history about the university in the Recreation Centre, and films and talks about the university in the campus from 10 am to 6 pm every day.
The objectives of centennial celebration of University of Yangon are to maintain the dignity of the country’s prominent university, to support lasting peace and national reconciliation, to implement a quality education that suits the country’s politics, economy and social situations, to generate capable human resources for education-oriented socioeconomic development and to upgrade the university into an international standard academic institution for the national and global welfares.—MNA
